	Caio Terra Seminar - August 18th (Cost is $75 per person)Prof. Terra is a Gi & No Gi World Champion and a FeatherWeight who has won the Open weight Division! In Celebration of the partnering of Fargo BJJ Academy & 605 Jiu-jitsu we will be hosting Caio Terra in Sioux Falls, SD at the 605 Academy. Parent/Kids 4-6 Year Old Class Our Parent/Kids Class is a huge success and we are now opening it up to everyone! Anyone who is interested or knows someone who may be interested please contact Prof. Sarah at the Academy.
	Jiu-jitsu Self Defense Class We have been having an overwhelming amount of people calling us interested in a basic Self-Defense class, and many of the current students have been interested in this as well. So beginning Tuesday July 10th at 730pm we will start the Street Self-Defense Program. All students currently in the MMA/Unlimited Program can include this class as well. Real Self-defense is important for anyone to know. Though many of us train for sport, fun or fitness... we are always Martial Artist First! Contact the Academy if you would like to get started. **Current Students, talk to Prof. George if you would like to add this class to your program
Advanced Jiu-jitsu getting longer! Beginning Monday July 9th the Advanced Jiu-jitsu Class will be 90 minutes instead of an hour.  The early classes will start a half hour earlier at 500pm, and the late classes will go a half hour later, until 900pm. This is to allow enough Training/Drilling time without compromising on the technical learning in class. Be sure to adjust your schedules!

Self-defense classes teach preparedness, awareness

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - With the weather heating up, more people will be out walking around on warm summer nights. Whether it's after dinner or a night on the town, there is no way of knowing you will make it home safe.

Kicking, punching, and techniques to get away aren't the only things taught at these self-defense classes. Teaching people to be aware of their surroundings may be one of the most important parts.

• Self-Defense Classes

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - With the weather heating up, more people will be out walking around on warm summer nights. Whether it's after dinner or a night on the town, there is no way of knowing you will make it home safe.

On a dark street you never truly know what could be lurking around any corner. Someone could jump out at any time and you would never know it. Now for male or female, the best way to make sure you can get away from a potential attacker is to be prepared.

Kelsy Johnson - Moorhead: “Not knowing what to do is the worst thing that could happen, because you just go into shock.”

Twenty-two year-old Kelsy Johnson may look small, but don't be fooled by her size. She trains here at the Fargo Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy to make sure she is prepared for any situation.

Kelsy Johnson: “Our primary objective is to get away. Now if I tried to punch somebody I probably couldn't do a knockout punch, and then you know beat them to crap, it wouldn’t work, I am a small person I know that, but I know enough that I could defend punches and things like that.”

Johnson was once grabbed by the arm by someone. She says she instantly went into shock and froze. Since coming to classes like this one Johnson feels more confident and knows she wouldn't have that same experience.

Kelsy Johnson: “Things have changed a lot more now, now that I train every day. Those kinds of things don't faze me, but it is something that you really have to be confident about, something you have to practice quite a bit.”

Kicking, punching, and techniques to get away aren't the only things taught at these self-defense classes. Owner Professor George Andersch says teaching people to be aware of their surroundings may be one of the most important parts.

Professor George Andersch – Fargo Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy: “They are texting, they don't see people coming up to them, just being aware of what's going on around you would deal with 90% of the problem.”

Professor Andersch says Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu may sound scary to some, but everyone and anyone can train. It teaches a grappling technique with more of a wrestling style.

George Andersch: “It is all positional, and it is realistic, it is what would happen if a real confrontation happens.”

Johnson and Professor Andersch agree that a simple seminar won't prepare you physically for a potential attack. They say it takes dedication and skill to be ready for a situation that we all hope never happens.

Kelsy Johnson: “It is something that you really have to be confident about, something you have to practice quite a bit, being in the mindset of self-defense every single day.”

Some more things to do to stay safe are to never walk anywhere alone, try to stay away from dark alleys or walkways, and don't walk in places you are unfamiliar with.

ADCC 2011: André Galvão wins weight and Absolute!

After the new ADCC champions of the weight divisions were established this Sunday, it was time for the absolute and the moment everyone had been waiting for: the superfight between Zé Mario Sperry and Renzo Gracie.

The veterans match was no walk in the park, going to two overtimes, during which Zé landed a takedown. Nearly out of the match area, Gracie confirmed the point to the judges table: 2-0. Renzo had to hurry to turn the score around but suffered another three points from a guard pass for his efforts. The score stood, and Zé Mario is the champion.

“Renzo is smaller than me, so I thought I’d pass his guard during regulation time. But I enjoyed the training; I’m going to keep up this pace in the academy,” said Zé Mario.

Renzo too promises to keep up his training, now at 44 years of age: “The mat was so slippery that it was like being in a pool. This match was a warm-up for my MMA debut, soon!”

Next came the absolute final, and, in getting there, André Galvão and Pablo Popovitch had their work cut out for them. Following the opening stage, the quarterfinals were made up of Victor Estima vs. Pablo Popovitch, Gunnar Nelson vs. Xande Ribeiro, Sérgio Moraes vs. André Galvão, and Murilo Santana vs. Vinicius “Pezão” Magalhães.

Galvão was in firm contention to be champion both at weight and open weight, eliminating Sergio Moraes on points, while Pablo Popovitch outpointed Victor Estima, Xande made it past Gunnar Nelson, and Murilo Santana defeated by decision Vinny Magalhães, another who could have become two-divisional champ.

The semifinals were tough. Pablo Popovitch won a decision over Xande Ribeiro and Galvão beat Murilo on penalty points. Both finalists came from the under-88kg division – proof of how it is truly one of the most stacked divisions.

“We had seven matches but I still have fuel iin my tank!” said Galvão. Pablo approached Galvão, and the two slapped hands. The two avoided speaking to each other before the final battle, though. Earlier they had faced off at weight, and Galvão won by one takedown.

Prior to the decider, Xande Ribeiro beat Murilo Santana by 2 to 0, earning the absolute bronze medal. All that was left was the gold-medal deciding match. In it, Galvão was quick on the attack, swiftly catching Pablo Popovitch’s foot and cementing his place as the big name of ADCC 2011.

“I took a chance going for the footlock while points weren’t yet being counted, and it worked. I just stuck it in my head that I was going to win,” he said.

So now there’s a plumb matchup for him in the works for ADCC 2013: Bráulio Estima in the supermatch.

UFC on FOX: Dustin Poirer vs Pablo Garza first fight announced for Nov. 12 event

With the UFC today announcing a deal with FOX to run its first show on network television on Nov. 12, 2011 at an event to-be-named in Anaheim, California, it's time to start filling up the card.

And the very first bout announced for the historic event is a featherweight scrap pitting Dustin Poirier againstPablo Garza, as announced by the promotion on its official website.

Poirier has been a beast ever since a unanimous decision loss to Danny Castillo in his WEC debut back in Aug. 2010.

He's gone on a 3-0 tear, including halting the Josh Grispi hype train with a star-making performance at UFC 125in what was his Octagon -- and featherweight -- debut.

While he was relegated to the preliminary card for his next bout, he made the most of it, defeating late replacement Jason Young with ease. Time to see if "The Diamond" can cut it in the rough.

Pablo Garza makes his way to the "Golden State" on the strength of two of the most impressive finishes in the past calendar year.

In Dec. 2010 he made his featherweight debut on the same night he made his first appearance inside the eight-sided playground and absolutely wrecked Fredson Paixao with a flying knee that easily earned him "Knockout of the Night."

As if that wasn't impressive enough, he followed it up by pulling off an utterly amazing flying triangle submission victory over Yves Jabouin at UFC 129, one of the biggest events in the history of the company, earning himself "Submission of the Night" in the process.

In short, the dude has got skills.

That's why it should be an explosive night of action once these two meet in the center of the cage. I wonder if that's how they found themselves matched up together on this card?

The UFC will make its debut on network TV on Nov. 12, 2011. Poirier vs. Garza is the first bout announced for the event, but a slew of fight bookings is expected to come in the very near future.
